Cairns for salmon
Photography // 2021 C-Print
Since prehistoric times people have piled up cairns on mountain paths. They are erected in clearly visible places to serve as signposts. In Scandinavia it is said that they repelled trolls and they provide space for good spirits.
In 2021, salmon fishing was banned in Tenojoki, one of the most important salmon rivers in Europe. The salmon population has to recover because of the decimation caused by man-made climate change. A balancing act indicated by the stacked stones in the middle of the river. I wonder what traces do we want to leave behind?
